FAQs

I know good home care and regular cleanings are important. But what else can I do to help prevent cavities?

Cavities are a common problem for both children and adults. Advancements in dentistry have provided us with new ways to win the fight. Fluoride supplements and dental sealants are two preventive dentistry treatments that can help stop cavities before they start. Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that cover deep molar grooves where bacteria can gather. This helps to eliminate decay and can be especially effective as part of children’s dental treatment. While at home, ensure you and your children are brushing their teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Also be sure your whole family is using fluoride toothpaste. Equally as important is making sure that you are cleaning between your teeth by flossing at least once a day.

Do you offer athletic mouthguards?

Yes, we do! It’s important to protect your teeth while playing sports; injuries that involve the face are among the most common. As a matter of fact, mouthguards also help prevent concussion. We can create a custom mouthguard that fits perfectly and shields teeth better than the boil-and-bite appliances found at sporting goods stores.

I need to have a cavity filled but don’t want dark spots in my teeth. Is there an alternative to amalgam fillings?

Alster Dental Associates offers tooth-colored fillings an alternative to metal fillings. Made of composite resin, tooth-colored fillings are a strong, durable option that is more attractive than amalgam. Tooth-colored fillings also require less reduction of your natural tooth, making them a more conservative choice.

I’m nervous about visiting the dentist. What can you do to help me relax?

Many people are a little anxious about their dental visits. Some are even fearful and avoid visiting the dentist all together. Upon request, Alster Dental Associates offers nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. A form of soothing sedation, nitrous is a good choice for patient who need help getting comfortable. You’ll simply breathe the nitrous oxide through a face mask, and our team will monitor you throughout your appointment making sure you stay relaxed.
